Ms. Parvaneh Bahar is an Iranian-American author and human rights activist. She immigrated to the United States in 1953, received her MLS in Library Science from Catholic University and her BA in English Literature from American University. She served for twenty years at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and was a senior librarian and researcher at her retirement in 1992. Throughout her life, Ms. Bahar worked as a political activist on behalf of civil rights for African Americans and women’s rights worldwide. She marched behind Martin Luther King Jr., protested on the steps of the US Supreme Court, testified before Congress, and was a founding member (and the only immigrant member) of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Her first book, “Morghe Sahar: Khaterat Parvaneh Bahar, (2004) was published in Farsi in Iran and her second book of short stories, “Abeh Porteghal,” (2009), was published in Farsi in Washington, DC. However, her latest and most celebrated book, “The Poet’s Daughter: Malek o’Shoara Bahar and the Immortal Song of Freedom,” (2011) was published in English and is told in two parts. The first part recounts Ms. Bahar’s early years with her father, one of Iran’s most respected poets and political activists, Malek o’ Shoara Bahar. In the second half, Ms. Bahar talks about her immigration to the US as a Diplomat’s wife and her own coming of age as a feminist and political activist inspired in large part by the ideologies of her esteemed father. Since the publication of The Poet’s Daughter, Ms. Bahar has received numerous awards, including one from the IAWF and the Phenomenal Woman Award (2014) from California State University in Northridge.
