Niloufar Talebi is a writer, award-winning translator, and multidisciplinary and theater artist. San Francisco poet laureate, Jack Hirschman said, ‘A cultural worker of the highest order, Niloufar does the bravest work, transforming not only the society from which she comes, but help change the society in which she lives.’ She is the editor/translator of BELONGING: New Poetry by Iranians Around the World (North Atlantic Books, 2008), and creator/performer of poetic video and stage works, Four Springs (2004), Midnight Approaches (2006), ICARUS/RISE (2007), Love, Carnal and Divine (2009), and The Persian Rite of Spring (2010). Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, Meet the Composer, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, she wrote the libretto for Atash Sorushan (Fire Angels) (2011) with music composed by Mark Grey for the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Talebi’s writing/performance art collaboration with Rosanna Gamson Worldwide, Layla Means Night, an exploration into the colonization of and violence towards women, premieres at ODC Theater in San Francisco (November 2013). She is currently writing and will narrate Abraham in Flames (May 2014), an opera for VisionIntoArts’s FERUS Festival at the Stone Residency. Her requiem, Epiphany (2015/2016), inspired by the TIbetan Book of the Dead and Aztec ‘flowersongs’ and created in collaboration with composer Paola Prestini and visual artist Ali Hossaini, will premiere in NYC. She is a Resident Artist at the American Lyric Theater in the 2013/2014 season. She is the Founding Director of TheTranslationProject.org.
