Biography

Mariam Memarsadeghi is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, civil liberties, civic education and internet freedom, particularly in Islamic contexts. She is co-founder and co-director of the E-Collaborative for Civic Education, a 501c3 organization whose flagship project, Tavaana: E-Learning Institute for Iranian Civil Society, provides in-country civic actors with secure, live instruction on a range of subjects including democracy, women’s rights, cybersecurity, leadership, journalism, and human rights activism. Mariam Memarsadeghi’s writings have appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and other publications. She is a frequent speaker at think tanks, is a contributor to NPR and has discussed democratization and civil society issues on the PBS NewsHour as well as other English, Persian and Arabic language television news programs. Her more than 15 years of international civil society capacity building experience include three years of post-conflict work in the Balkan region. Mariam Memarsadeghi has been a global consultant in the fields of human rights and democracy building and previously oversaw Freedom House’s Middle East and North Africa programs.
